Standards for Listening, Viewing and Speaking:
Media Products:
By using these activities outlined in the project lesson plans students will reach all 4 Benchmarks. Students will be creating
multimedia presentations using PowerPoint to show what they have learned. They will also work in groups to create a video
documentary and/or news broadcast. Students will be using word processing to create reports as well. They will research
information that is consistent with their topic while using sufficient detail. They will analyze the information they have found
for purpose and appropriateness.
Information Retrieval
Students will learn about electronic sources of information. They will be encouraged to use books, magazines, and other
sourceswhen completing their projects. They will also locate sources of information independently at the library and online.
These skillsare indicators for Benchmarks 1 and 2. Students will collect, sort, and select sources and information that they
will use in their project research and online lessons. By doing this, they will reach Benchmark 3. Students will also analyze
the information for the appropriateness of the information for the audience, purpose, occasion, and context.
Speaking
Through the preparation of oral reports and impromptu speeches based on classroom content, the students will reach
Benchmark 2.
Their video/multimedia projects will demonstrate Benchmark 3 which is to produce a coherent message. Collaborative
projects such as the creation of a news show, documentary, or multimedia project and presentation students will meet
Benchmarks 4, 5, and 6.
They will need to use appropriate content for their purpose, audience, occasion, and context. When they present orally, they
will be demonstrating control of delivery skills by maintaining eye contact, articulation, appropriate nonverbal behaviors,
expression of voice, and responding in an appropriate manner to the ideas and opinions of others. They will also be
demonstrating appropriate behavior
of working in small groups.
Listening
Benchmarks 1 and 3 will be met when students demonstrate attentive listening skills as others are presenting their projects.
They will also ask questions when they need clarification of an idea or thought. They will answer each other’s questions that
are related to the message. They will demonstrate Benchmark 4 by remembering significant details of the projects. Students
will demonstrate Benchmark 6 while working in small groups by paying attention to what their group mates are saying, not
distracting or interrupting each other, summarizing the comments by group members and lastly, recognizing that others may
have a different point of view and accepting them.
Standards for Reading and Writing:
Writing
Students will be expected to write stories, and oral presentations of their final projects. They will show expression in their
writing by using the appropriate “voice.” They will also write with a clear beginning, middle and ending. They will use
concept mapping for organizing their writings. They will use descriptive words and phrases in their projects while writing
clearly and concisely. Their writings will reflect the use of American English conventions. They will also turn in rough drafts,
revisions, and peer editing reviews of their writings. They will take notes and make outlines. They will be writing journal
entries, a biographical letter to a king or queen, rewrite a fairy tale that fits in with the Ancient Egyptian culture, and writing
the scripts for their final projects. All these activities reach the Benchmarks of this standard.
Literature Genres
By rewriting a fairy tale to reflect the ancient Egyptian culture, students will be reaching Benchmark 1 which is demonstrating
knowledge of the effects of cultures on literature.
Standards for Geography and World History:
Geography
During their final project presentation students will be expected to have included a map of ancient
location using longitude and latitude. This allows students to reach Benchmark 1. Students will also create a brochure which
they have designed to attract new settlers to ancient
World History
Student final projects will contain information on geography, farming, medicine, art, architecture, government, science, trade,
and religion of ancient
