Lesson Plan 2

Title: Fairy Tales in Ancient Times

Subject: Ancient Egypt and Writing

Grade Level: 5th Grade

Time Duration: 1 Lab periods of approximately 45 - 60 minutes

                        2 – 3 class periods

Overview:

Students will research ancient Egypt and re-write a fairy tale to reflect the culture and time.  They will work in cooperative groups of three to revise and peer review their work.

Objectives:

                The Learner will:

·       Conduct research and find facts about Ancient Egypt which will be included in their rewritten fairy tale

·       Re-write a fairy tale of their choice using standard writing conventions

·       Work in cooperative groups to peer review each group member’s work.

Materials:

·       Computer

·       Internet Connection

·       Paper

·       Pencils

·       Hand outs with URLs of the web sites to be used or have them bookmarked on the computer and ready to go.

·       http://www.archkckcs.org/technobowl/5ancient/5resource.htm This is a collection of links for ancient civilizations.  Students should be cautioned to use only the links for ancient Egypt.

·       http://www.yahooligans.com This is a great search engine that will have student appropriate information.

·       TeamBoard if available, this is a nice too for projecting web sites on to a screen for group viewing.

Activities and Procedures:

1.   Discuss with students how fairy tales reflect the culture and people of the lands they come from.  Bring up examples such as Cinderella and Robin Hood.  Tell them that they will be conducting some research to learn more about ancient Egypt so they can re-write their favorite fairy tale. Ask them what types of things might be different?  (Names, places, social status- Cinderella might be a slave, or religious beliefs – maybe the fairy godmother in Ancient Egypt would be one of the goddesses.)

2.   Give students a paper with the URL that contains links for Ancient Egyptian information or let them conduct their own searches.  Caution them that they must clear the search keywords with you before they start their search.

3.   Tell students they need to take notes on the geography of the area, government, religion, and people of ancient Egypt.  They will have to include these elements in their story.

4.   Direct students to the student version of this page and have them click on the rubric.  Discuss the elements on the rubric and make sure the students have a thorough understanding of what is expected of them.

5.   When you are satisfied that they have gather enough information they can start writing the rough draft of the story.

6.   Once their rough draft is finished they need to work in cooperative groups to peer review their work.  Groups should be no larger than 3 students.  They will then make corrections/revisions to their work.

7.   They will meet again in small groups to check their revisions and check their stories for fluency.

Conclusion:

Ask the students to share what they wrote and what they have learned about Ancient Egypt.  Also, for those who conducted their own internet searches, ask them what type of information they were able to locate.
