Title:  Great Reasons to Live in Ancient Egypt

Subject:  Ancient Egypt, Persuasive Writing, Technology Skills

Grade Level:  5th Grade

Time Duration: 1-2 lab periods of approximately 45 - 60 minutes.

Overview: 

Students will create a brochure for the Immigration Office of ancient Egypt.  They will design it to attract new settlers to the area.  They must include the time period and information about the geography, farming, medicine, art, architecture, government, trade, and religion.

Objectives:

                The Learner will:

·       Research information about ancient Egypt

·       Work in cooperative groups of two to create a brochure persuading new settlers to the area

·       Download pictures and import them into a MS Publisher document

·       Demonstrate knowledge of geography, farming, medicine, art, architecture, government, trade, and religion as demonstrated by their brochure

Materials:

·       Computer

·       Internet connection

·       MS Publisher program or other program in which students can create a brochure

·       Printer

·       Paper

·       Direct students to use web sites used in the other lessons and use http://www.yahooligans.com as a search engine

·       TeamBoard if available, this is a nice too for projecting web sites on to a screen for group viewing.

Activities and Procedures:

1.   Lead students into a discussion about why people might want to migrate to a new land.

2.   Explain to the students that they will be working in cooperative groups of two to create a brochure enticing people to move to ancient Egypt.  Tell them what elements their brochure must contain such as the time period and information about the geography, farming, medicine, art, architecture, government, trade, and religion.

3.   Show them how to save graphics to the hard drive of their computer by right mouse clicking on the graphic and choosing save.  Next show them how to import their graphic into their document.  They can also use a cut and paste method.

4.   Remind students of good searching techniques.  They may use yahooligans search engine, or any resource we have visited online.

5.   Direct students to the student version of this page.

Conclusion:

Have students share their finished work with their classmates.  Tell them that next lab period they will begin their culminating activity.  They will work in groups of fives to create a news show video tape and share it with the other classes.
