Teacher Lesson Plan 6

Title:  The Great News Show

Subject:  Social Studies (Ancient Egypt), Speaking, Writing, and Technology Skills

Grade Level:  5th Grade

Time Duration: 1 -2 lab periods of approximately 45 - 60 minutes.

                        2 class periods

Overview:

Students will work together in groups of 7 to create a news show about ancient Egypt.  They will create a concept map which show how their information will link together.  They will use a video camera and tape their shows.  When the video programs are taped, parents will be invited in to a viewing.

Objectives:

                The Learner will:

·       Research information about ancient Egypt

·       Work in cooperative groups of 7 to create a video show

·       Use a video camera

·       Use visual aids such as maps and pictures

·       Demonstrate knowledge of geography, farming, medicine, art, architecture, government, trade, and religion as demonstrated by their presentation.

Materials:

·       Computer

·       Internet connection

·       Inspiration software

·       Video Camera

·       Blank video tapes

·       Printer

·       Paper

·       Direct students to use web sites used in the other lessons and use http://www.yahooligans.com as a search engine

·       TeamBoard if available, this is a nice too for projecting web sites on to a screen for group viewing.

Activities and Procedures:

1.   Tell students that the culminating activity of this unit is to create a video news show that can be shared with parents.  Each student will be responsible for writing a 2 – 3 minute segment on the subject they are assigned.  The subjects are:

·       Geography and Farming – make sure you have a map of the area

·       Medicine

·       Art

·       Architecture

·       Government – structure and rulers

·       Trade

·       Religion

Students will have to include a map of ancient Egypt and a timeline.  They may make their timeline out of long paper or they may write it on the board and have it behind them during the filming.  (You might want to enlist parental help to film the news shows.)

2.   Tell students they will have to first find the information they wish to include in their presentation.  They will use the process of draft, revision, and final product to write their papers.  They may consult with other group members on their papers for the purposes of peer review and idea gathering.

3.    Remind students of good searching techniques.  They may use yahooligans search engine, or any resource we have visited online.

4.   Once students have completed their paper they must work on the visual aids for their show.  These will be created in class hopefully under the watchful eye of the art teacher.

5.   Have students work together with their group to create a concept map showing how their information will link together.  They can use Inspiration or use a large piece of paper.

6.   Students will practice and direct their shows, deciding which order they want to present their information in.

7.   Once they have rehearsed, they may video tape their show.  Each student should get a turn manning the camera.  It is best if the camera can be set on a tripod and zoom in and out to create some variety.

8.   Direct students to the student version of this web page.

Conclusion:

Have students create an invitation to their parents to come and view their show.  If you want to make it a little more fun, you can serve Egyptian treats!  There are many good recipe resources on the Internet.  This site has several easy recipes http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/9684/egyptfood.html.
