Seeds

The seed is the beginning of a plant’s life.  It contains everything it needs in order to grow into an adult plant.  It has a seed coat to protect the seed.  It has its own stored food. The seedling uses the stored food until its leaves are able to produce food.  The last seed part is the seed leaf.  The seed leaf is the developing plant.

Seeds either fall to the ground near the parent, or they are scattered.  A seed can be scattered in several ways.  The wind can carry a seed through the air.  Animals pick up the seeds in their fur.  Water scatters seeds when seeds fall into a stream, river or lake.  By scattering the seeds, plants get enough space and sunlight they need in order to grow.

Here a farmer “sows” or scatters the seeds in the soil so it can germinate or begin to grow.
