Earth

Earth is the third planet from the Sun.  It is the one you are most familiar with because it is the one you live on!  This is the only planet in our solar system that supports life.

Earth is 92,960,000 miles away from the sun.  It has a diameter of 7,926 miles.  Earth has seasons because the axis is tilted more than 23 degrees.

The Earth is made up of layers.  The inner core is mostly nickel. The Earth is made up of mostly water, basalt, and granite.  Oceans cover approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface.  The Earth’s crust is thin.  It is made up of silicon, aluminum, calcium, sodium, and potassium.

The Earth’s atmosphere is a thin layer that is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, less than 1% argon, and 0.03% carbon dioxide.  There are also trace amounts of other gases.  The atmosphere is 300 miles thick but most of it is only ten miles from the surface of the Earth.  Clouds cover most of the Earth.

Each day on Earth lasts 24 hours. A year on Earth lasts 365 days.

Earth is the only planet in our solar system that is not named after a Greek or Roman god.  The name comes from old English and Germanic languages.

Earth has just one moon.  The moon has no atmosphere and does have frozen water.  The average distance of the moon from the Earth is 238,900 miles.  It revolves around the Earth once every 27 days, 8 hours.  The moon is the only other body in the solar system that has had a human walk on the surface.

This is what the symbol for the planet Earth looks like:
