Kansas Curricular Standards

Addressed by this Unit of Study

Standards for Listening, Viewing and Speaking:

Media Products:

  • Communicators effectively use a variety of media to create products to communicate for a variety of audiences, purpose, occasions and contexts.

By using these activities outlined in the project lesson plans students will reach all 4 Benchmarks.  Students will be creating

multimedia presentations using PowerPoint to show what they have learned.  They will also work in groups to create a video

documentary and/or news broadcast.  Students will be using word processing to create reports as well. They will research

information that is consistent with their topic while using sufficient detail.  They will analyze the information they have found

 for purpose and appropriateness.

Information Retrieval

  • The communicator will retrieve information from a variety of appropriate sources.

Students will learn about electronic sources of information.  They will be encouraged to use books, magazines, and other sources

when completing their projects.  They will also locate sources of information independently at the library and online.  These skills

are indicators for Benchmarks 1 and 2.  Students will collect, sort, and select sources and information that they will use in their

project research and online lessons.  By doing this, they will reach Benchmark 3.  Students will also analyze the information for the appropriateness of the information for the audience, purpose, occasion, and context.

Speaking

  • Learners speak effectively for audiences, purposes, occasions, and contexts.

Through the preparation of oral reports and impromptu speeches based on classroom content, the students will reach Benchmark 2.

Their video/multimedia projects will demonstrate Benchmark 3 which is to produce a coherent message.  Collaborative projects such

as the creation of a news show, documentary, or multimedia project and presentation students will meet Benchmarks 4, 5, and 6.

They will need to use appropriate content for their purpose, audience, occasion, and context.  When they present orally, they will be demonstrating control of delivery skills by maintaining eye contact, articulation, appropriate nonverbal behaviors, expression of voice,

and responding in an appropriate manner to the ideas and opinions of others.  They will also be demonstrating appropriate behavior

of working in small groups.

Listening

  • Learners will participate effectively as listeners within formal and informal groups.

Benchmarks 1 and 3 will be met when students demonstrate attentive listening skills as others are presenting their projects.  They

will also ask questions when they need clarification of an idea or thought.  They will answer each other’s questions that are related

to the message.  They will demonstrate Benchmark 4 by remembering significant details of the projects.  Students will demonstrate

Benchmark 6 while working in small groups by paying attention to what their group mates are saying, not distracting or interrupting

each other, summarizing the comments by group members and lastly, recognizing that others may have a different point of view and

accepting them.

Standards for Reading and Writing:

Writing

  • Learners write effectively for a variety of audiences, purposes, and contexts.

Students will be expected to write stories, and oral presentations of their final projects.  They will show expression in their writing by

using the appropriate “voice.”  They will also write with a clear beginning, middle and ending.  They will use concept mapping for

organizing their writings.  They will use descriptive words and phrases in their projects while writing clearly and concisely.  Their

writings will reflect the use of American English conventions.  They will also turn in rough drafts, revisions, and peer editing reviews

of their writings.  They will take notes and make outlines. They will be writing journal entries, a biographical letter to a king or queen,

rewrite a fairy tale that fits in with the Ancient Egyptian culture, and writing the scripts for their final projects.  All these activities

reach the Benchmarks of this standard.

Literature Genres

  • Learners demonstrate knowledge of literature from a variety of cultures, genres, and time periods.

By rewriting a fairy tale to reflect the ancient Egyptian culture, students will be reaching Benchmark 1 which is demonstrating

knowledge of the effects of cultures on literature.

Standards for Geography and World History:

Geography

  • The student uses a working knowledge and understanding of the spatial organization of Earth’s surface and relationships among people, places, and physical and human environments in order to explain the interactions that occur in our interconnected world.

During their final project presentation students will be expected to have included a map of ancient Egypt which includes its location

using longitude and latitude.  This allows students to reach Benchmark 1.  Students will also create a brochure which they have designed to attract new settlers to ancient Egypt.  Students will achieve Benchmark 4 by completing this activity.

World History

  • The student uses a working knowledge and understanding of significant individuals, groups, ideas, events, eras, and developments in the history of Kansas, the United States, and the world, utilizing essential analytical and research skills.

Student final projects will contain information on geography, farming, medicine, art, architecture, government, science, trade, and religion of ancient Egypt.  This will enable them to reach Benchmark 1.
