WEB AUTHORING LESSON PLAN

by J. Napier-Faeih

This is the best way I have found to teach students how to create a webpage. If you walk them through a highly structured lesson where everyone creates the same sample webpage, you will have most of your students bored and not wanting to create a new one.
OBJECTIVES Your objectives will depend on what you are trying to teach. My objectives would include:
  • The learner will learn basic HMTL codes.
  • The learner will publish his project on the internet.
  • The learner will use background color, link color, graphics, and text.
  • The learner will Storyboard a web site about "?". I have students who did a wonderful accross the curriculum project on the Holocaust. I will have the next group that has that assignment post their reports, poetry, and art work on their pages.
  • The learner will present his finished project to the class.
Student Preparation for Web Site Authoring
  1. Instruct the students to create a story board. This is going to include all the elements of the web page: graphics, text, lines, links, and credits. Have them write out all the text they will be using. This is a good homework assignment!

  2. Give each student a copy of the Resource list. Discuss the various types of graphics on the internet. Discuss the difference between linkware, shareware, freeware, and material that is copy-writed.
  3. Have them go to Iconbazaar and teach them how to save a graphic to the A:/ drive. Using the URL's on the resource list, have them find graphics that will enhance their page. They can lok for bullets and lines also. (You might want to set a time limit on this activity) Remind them to write down the complete name of the graphics because they will need them when they are writing their page. (Because not everyone listens well and some people just get overwhelmed with the amount of information you are teaching them, show them how to look up the properties of their graphic file and find the MS DOS name.)
  4. Have the students look up some sites that they can use as links on their page. Remind them that the link should give more information about the subject they are using.
Procedure

I plan to take the students to a simply designed web site that I have made. Next, I will give them printed out copies of the code for the page. I will have highlighted the codes for them. I expect them to refer to this page if they need an example later on. We will discuss the codes that are on the paper.

  1. Have them open Notepad and their browser. Show them how to view work off-line.
  2. Show them the opening HTML tags, head tags, and title tags. Have them enter those tags on Notepad. Next, have them enter the body tags and explain that the body is where they will be placing images, texts, and links.
  3. Have the students save their project as "index.html" and have them open their browser to see the title of their page.
  4. Show the students the different sizes of text using the H1 to H6 tags. Have them type some sentences using the different sizes of text.
  5. Show the students how to change their text color.
  6. Discuss and use the Bold, Italics, and underline tags.
  7. Explain Paragraph tags, blockquote tags and list tags. Give the students a few minutes to play with these tags.
  8. Show the students how to set the colors of the background and various links.
  9. Have the students place their graphics on the A:/drive along with their .html file. Show them how to place graphics on their page and use the align commands.
  10. Show them how to link to other pages in their files, other websites, and how to create links using graphics and not text. If they are annoyed by the border of their linking graphic, show them how to get rid of it using the borders=0 command.
  11. Have the students design their websites using the storyboard they designed.
  12. When the web pages are all designed, show the students how to upload their pages to the server that will host them.
